June 3, 2014

shutterstock_192589115One of the biggest things people are doing right now is preparing for summer. Getting their beach bodies ready and buying all of the food to make for the perfect barbeque, everyone is excited to finally be able to let their hair down and have some fun in the summer sun! One thing people may be overlooking, however, is revamping their smile! If you have crooked, misaligned, chipped, or stained teeth, you may feel as though your smile will never be exactly the way you want it. Fortunately, Drs. Michael and Laura Ryan are able to give you the smile of your dreams thanks to porcelain veneers.

The start to getting your porcelain veneers begins with a consultation with Drs. Ryan. There, they will be able to fully assess your smile in its current state, as well as ask you about your future goals regarding your smile. This will also give you the chance to address any questions or concerns you may have, as we want you to be fully informed throughout the entire procedure. Once it is determined that you are a candidate, that is where the real fun begins!

Your natural tooth is prepared for your porcelain veneers by removing a small bit of enamel. This way, we are sure your mouth has enough space for your new smile! Your custom made porcelain veneers are then added, and are made permanent with dental resin cement. A simple procedure, but at the end, you are left with a completely new smile that anyone would be proud of showing off! If you are curious as to how Drs. Ryan can help give your smile the makeover you deserve just in time for summer with porcelain veneers, make an appointment today, and the entire Ryan Dental Group team will be glad to help!

Drs. Ryan Protect Young Smiles with Children’s Dentistry

May 14, 2014

shutterstock_128110355The wonderful thing about children is that they’re carefree and easily made happy. Unfortunately, one of the things they can’t be lighthearted about is taking care of their teeth. At our office, we realize the importance of your child’s teeth, and we are ready and able to start your child off in the right direction. We understand that a dentist’s office may not necessarily your child’s favorite place in the world, which is why our knowledgeable team is ready to welcome them with open arms and friendly smiles.

Children’s dentistry is very important because it plays a crucial role in preventing dental problems before they arise, as well as sets up your child for success in the future. Common practices in children’s dentistry are dental sealants. Because a child’s tooth is more susceptible to cavities and decay, sealants grant protection by having a plastic covering painted in the grooves of the tooth to save from harm in the future. Sealants are primarily applied to the teeth toward the back of the mouth because the grooves are deeper than the other teeth, therefore more susceptible to deterioration.

Coinciding with sealants, fluoride treatments are also involved in children’s dentistry frequently. Fluoride plays a crucial role in preventing decay as well as acting as an agent for attracting other minerals, like Calcium and Phosphate, to build strong teeth. Granted, fluoride does not prevent cavities from emerging, but it may delay their arrival, giving your child a better chance to have beautiful, healthy teeth and a glorious smile.

We recommend you bring your child for their first visit around the age of three. That way, we can see how their teeth are progressing, and give us an idea of what kind of treatment they may need in the future. Beginning routine brushing and flossing habits early on is a sure way of having your child’s smile be as stunning as possible, and our doctors as well as the rest of the team are here to make sure your child has an awesome experience.

Root Canal Therapy Can Save Your Smile

April 2, 2014

she hurt so bad.Living with pain is never easy, but tooth pain can turn your world upside down. It is one thing for pain to come and go, but when it is constant, the effects can be crippling. You may think that there is no respite to your pain, or that the process of getting it handled will hurt as much as the toothache itself. Fortunately, the doctors at Ryan Dental Group are able to alleviate your tooth pain by performing root canal therapy.

Root canals have gotten a bad reputation over the years with people thinking that they cause more harm than actually alleviate it. Nothing could be further from the truth, and it is important that people realize that instead of going through life in unnecessary pain.

A root canal needs to be performed when the pulp of the tooth has been infected. This can happen when there has been a crack in the tooth, a cavity, dental trauma, and many other reasons. The way we address the situation is removing the infected pulp from the tooth. We then fill the tooth, put antibiotics on it, and place a crown on top to prevent any further harm from taking place.

One of the reasons why root canal therapy is so important is because if a severe tooth ache is left untreated, it can start wreaking havoc on the rest of your mouth, as well as your body. If the infection starts to touch your nerves, it can really start affecting you in a negative way. It is important to take care of any dental pain you may have as soon as possible, and Ryan Dental Group is just the place to have that done!

Preventive Dentistry for Allen, TX

March 28, 2014

preventive dentistryHow often do you need to see a dentist? At Ryan Dental Group, we recommend that our Allen patients see Dr. Michael Ryan or Dr. Laura Ryan twice a year, or about six months apart. During your visit, we can help you clean excess plaque and calculus from around your teeth and gums. We can also look for symptoms of these exact conditions and propose a treatment plan to help you.

In between appointments, we suggest that patients brush at least twice a day, floss at least once, and rinse with an antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash. It will also help if you stick to a balanced diet. Limit the amount of sugary or starchy foods you eat. Instead, eat more fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy.

Nightguards for Teeth Grinding

February 28, 2014

bruxismFor many patients, teeth grinding is a natural response to stress. What’s more, those who struggle with this problem—the medical term for it is bruxism—often have the most trouble while they’re asleep. This can have a devastating impact on oral health. Over time, the pressure and motion of bruxism can cause the surfaces of teeth to become worn. The muscles and tissues around the jaw can also become damaged.

Thankfully, patients who struggle with bruxism don’t have to live with their uncomfortable symptoms. With a custom-made nightguard from Ryan Dental Group, patients from Allen and beyond can sleep through the night without grinding their teeth.

Your treatment begins with a consultation with Dr. Michael Ryan or Dr. Laura Ryan. During your appointment, we’ll look at the condition of your teeth and talk to you about the symptoms you’ve been experiencing. Your nightguard will be custom-made for you, and we have many different kinds you can try; if one doesn’t work, we can see if another one will help you. We can also talk to you about relaxation techniques that can help you deal with stress.

Give Your Gums the Star Treatment with Periodontal Disease Therapy

February 17, 2014

Healthy gums FTW!People often forget that to have a healthy result, one must have a healthy foundation. Many people believe that as long as your teeth are straight and white, they are healthy. Unfortunately, not much attention is paid to the gums, which are the most crucial contributors to a healthy smile. Gum (periodontal) disease is when your gums are under attack, and it can result in unhealthy teeth. Dr. Michael Ryan and Dr. Laura Ryan are dedicated to making sure your gums are as healthy as they can be, which is why they offer periodontal therapy to their patients.

Periodontal disease affects over 80% of the population, which makes it one of the more common diseases out there. One point that may be shocking is the fact that many people may not even be aware that they are suffering from periodontal disease, leaving their mouths to ongoing infection and deterioration. Some of the most common signs of periodontal disease are swollen gums, gums that bleed when you brush or floss, tenderness, and loose teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to an increased risk in heart disease, stroke, dementia, and much, much more.

When you come in for your appointment, we will tackle your periodontal disease with scaling and root planing. These procedures allow us to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line. This way, we are able to remove all of the harmful bacteria in areas that your toothbrush and flossing cannot reach, giving you a clear mouth! We will also be able to smooth the root surfaces, making it more difficult for tartar to build. We will give you antibiotics for your gum disease, helping your mouth heal, then close the appointment with instructions on how to better take care of your gums. If you’re interested in how Drs. Laura and Michael Ryan are able to help you with your periodontal disease, make an appointment at our office, and we’d be more than happy to help.

Experience Relaxing Dental Care with Sedation Dentistry

January 31, 2014

sedation dentistryDental anxiety is a very real condition that patients around the world struggle with. Thankfully, those who have put off or avoided care because of anxiety can relax and get the important help they need with sedation dentistry. This powerful service is changing lives by taking the fear out of dental appointments. Imagine going to your next appointment and feeling a soothing sense of peace and relaxation instead of the nervousness you often feel.

At Ryan Dental Group, Drs. Michael and Laura Ryan can help you have that experience. Our Allen dental office gives patients a choice of three different types of sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Oral Conscious
  • Intravenous

All three forms of sedation dentistry can help, but each one works for slightly different levels of anxiety.

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is breathed in through a mask. It works quickly on mild to moderate anxiety and wears off soon after the mask has been removed.

Oral conscious sedation works using a prescription sedative and easily takes care of patients with moderate anxiety. It can also be combined with nitrous oxide for more comprehensive care.

Intravenous sedation, or IV sedation, is administered through a tube and provides Dr. Michael Ryan and Dr. Laura Ryan with the most control over your feelings of relaxation. That’s why it’s commonly used for patients with moderate to severe anxiety, or patients who are receiving multiple services in one appointment. For both oral conscious sedation and IV sedation, patients will need to have a friend or family member at the appointment to drive them home.

Do you want to learn more about sedation dentistry? Call Ryan Dental Group today for an appointment. Dr. Michael Ryan and Dr. Laura Ryan will be happy to talk to you about your sedation dentistry options, and any of our Allen office’s great dental services. We happily serve patients from Lucas, Plano, McKinney, Fairview, Parker, and other nearby communities.

Dental Care for Young Patients

January 22, 2014

children's dentistryRecently, we did a post on preventive dental care, which is important for enjoying good oral health. Today we’d like to focus on a similar service—dentistry for children. Like adults, children need preventive care. At Ryan Dental Group in Allen, TX, you’ll find help for both you and your little one.

When should my child start seeing a dentist?

Your child should see a pediatric dentist as soon as her first tooth comes then. Then, once your child is around the age of three, you can start bringing her to appointments at Ryan Dental Group. Going to the same dental office for checkups and procedures makes dental care more convenient, and turns visits into a family experience that will reduce any feelings of anxiety your child might feel.

Dr. Laura Ray is happy to help children prevent and treat cavities, gum disease, and other common oral health problems. One way she can help is with dental sealants and fluoride treatments. Dental sealants physically protect teeth from bacteria and plaque, the ingredients behind decay and gum disease. Meanwhile, fluoride supplements strengthen enamel and decrease the likelihood of your little one developing a cavity.

Dr. Laura Ryan can also teach your child about brushing and flossing. This is important. When children learn healthy habits early on, they’re more likely to stick with them as they grow.

Is it time for your child’s next appointment?

Call Ryan Dental Group in Allen to schedule an appointment with Dr. Laura Ryan. We offer exceptional children’s dentistry to patients from Lucas, Parker, Plano, McKinney, Fairview, and surrounding communities. We look forward to helping your entire family smile.

Offering Preventive Dental Care to Allen and Beyond

January 15, 2014

preventive dentistryAt Ryan Dental Group in Allen, TX preventive care is an elemental part of what we offer.  After all, everyone needs it. From the moment we get our baby teeth as children we’re vulnerable to the most common of oral health problems. With preventive dental care, the goal is to diagnose and treat these common problems as soon as possible so they don’t become serious.

A preventive dental visit has two important components. The first is a cleaning. With a cleaning, we have a chance to clean and polish your teeth to remove bacteria and plaque—the two ingredients behind problems like gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing and flossing at home can help you control these, but even the best home-care routine isn’t enough to keep the mouth as clean as it needs to be.

A preventive dental visit will also include an oral exam by Dr. Michael Ryan or Dr. Laura Ryan. During every oral exam, Drs. Michael and Laura Ryan will perform a tooth-by-tooth exam to look for the most common oral health problems. They’ll also look for signs of TMJ dysfunction, teeth grinding, and oral cancer. If anything is found during your exam, our Allen dental team can start putting together a treatment plan for you right away.

A regular visit will also include advice from our team on how to care for your teeth between visits. We recommend that patients brush at least twice a day, but preferably after every meal. We also recommend flossing at least once a day and using a good mouthwash. An antibacterial mouthwash will help you reduce the presence of bacteria in your mouth while a fluoride-based mouthwash will strengthen the protective enamel on your teeth.

Is it time for your next preventive dental visit? For optimal oral health, you should see a dentist and oral hygienist twice a year. Call Ryan Dental Group today to schedule your first appointment for 2014. We serve patients from Allen, Parker, Lucas, McKinney, Fairview, Plano, and beyond.
