We’d like to ask you a sensitive question—when was the last time you saw the dentist? Because the American Dental Association recommends biannual dental checkups and cleanings, the correct answer to that question is sometime in the last six months. However, there are many people who are simply too afraid to see the dentist. Estimates are that more than 30 percent of adults fall into this category. If you happen to be one of these people, we’d like to make a suggestion—see your dentist in Allen just to talk about sedation dentistry. Dr. Michael Ryan and Dr. Laura Ryan offer three types of sedation. The one that’s right for you will depend on your level of anxiety and what kind of dental procedure you need.

At Ryan Dental Group, we understand that a dentist’s office is not necessarily someone’s favorite place in the world to be. Many people suffer from a fear of the dentist, and they may not know what to do. Though the fear may be mind for some, for others, it can be debilitating, causing them to avoid seeking dental treatment, no matter how badly they may need it. Because Dr. Michael Ryan and Dr. Laura Ryan understand the dental needs and fears of their patients, they are able to offer sedation dentistry at their Allen, TX dental office.
We are able to offer our patients a few choices when it comes to sedation dentistry. The first is oral conscious sedation. With this, all our patients have to do is take a prescribed pill before their appointment, and you will remain awake throughout your dental appointment. You will feel extremely relaxed and will experience no pain. Another option is IV sedation, which means we will administer the sedation intravenously. Both oral conscious sedation and IV sedation are for our patients that experience high levels of anxiety when visiting a dentist, and we will be able to customize your sedation depending on your nervousness. With IV sedation, we will be able to monitor your heart rate, breathing, and other vitals as you are getting your dental work done. With these forms of sedation, you will have to have a loved one drive you home after your appointment, as the effects of the sedation will still be in your system.
The most common form of sedation is nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas. This involves breathing the sedative through a nasal mask, causing you to feel euphoria and warmth. You will remain conscious throughout the appointment, and the side effects dissipate after the mask is removed. You will be able to drive yourself home after your appointment, and your smile will be in better health!

Dental anxiety is a very real condition that patients around the world struggle with. Thankfully, those who have put off or avoided care because of anxiety can relax and get the important help they need with sedation dentistry. This powerful service is changing lives by taking the fear out of dental appointments. Imagine going to your next appointment and feeling a soothing sense of peace and relaxation instead of the nervousness you often feel.
- Nitrous Oxide
- Oral Conscious
All three forms of sedation dentistry can help, but each one works for slightly different levels of anxiety.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is breathed in through a mask. It works quickly on mild to moderate anxiety and wears off soon after the mask has been removed.
Oral conscious sedation works using a prescription sedative and easily takes care of patients with moderate anxiety. It can also be combined with nitrous oxide for more comprehensive care.
Intravenous sedation, or IV sedation, is administered through a tube and provides Dr. Michael Ryan and Dr. Laura Ryan with the most control over your feelings of relaxation. That’s why it’s commonly used for patients with moderate to severe anxiety, or patients who are receiving multiple services in one appointment. For both oral conscious sedation and IV sedation, patients will need to have a friend or family member at the appointment to drive them home.
